Background of the Study
Parental support plays a significant role in the academic success of students, providing emotional, financial, and motivational backing during their educational journey (Nwachukwu et al., 2023). In nursing education, where students face high academic demands, parental support can contribute to their resilience, academic motivation, and overall success. Rivers State University Teaching Hospital is a leading healthcare institution where nursing students undertake both theoretical coursework and clinical practice. While academic success is influenced by numerous factors, the role of parental support is often overlooked in the context of nursing education in Nigeria. This study seeks to explore the effect of parental support on the academic success of nursing students at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
Statement of the Problem
The academic success of nursing students is shaped by multiple factors, including financial resources, personal motivation, and academic guidance. Parental support, particularly in the form of emotional encouragement and financial assistance, may have a significant impact on students' ability to succeed in their studies (Chinonso & Nwafor, 2024). However, in Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, it is unclear how parental support influences the academic performance of nursing students. This study aims to address this gap by examining the role of parental support in the academic success of nursing students at the institution.
Objectives of the Study
1. To examine the effect of parental support on the academic success of nursing students at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
2. To assess the types of parental support that contribute to nursing students' academic success.
3. To explore the challenges nursing students face in receiving parental support and how these challenges affect their academic outcomes.
Research Questions
1. How does parental support affect the academic success of nursing students at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital?
2. What types of parental support are most beneficial to nursing students' academic performance?
3. What challenges do nursing students face in receiving parental support, and how do these challenges impact their academic success?
Research Hypotheses
1. Parental support does not significantly affect the academic success of nursing students at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital.
2. There is no significant relationship between types of parental support and nursing students’ academic performance.
3. Challenges in receiving parental support do not significantly affect the academic success of nursing students.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on nursing students at Rivers State University Teaching Hospital who are currently receiving parental support. Limitations include the variability in the types of support provided and potential biases in self-reported data.

• Parental Support: Emotional, financial, and academic assistance provided by parents to their children to aid in their educational success.
• Academic Success: The achievement of academic goals, such as high grades, mastery of skills, and successful completion of coursework and clinical practice.
• Types of Parental Support: Different forms of assistance, including emotional encouragement, financial aid, and academic guidance.
